Submissions

It is a great challenge to translate living experience into compelling words and pictures, and we are looking for writers and photographers who can take our readers on journeys of their own.

If PASSIONFRUIT appeals to your wanderlust, and if the compass guiding your travels is a desire to learn, please consider contributing to our magazine.

We're currently accepting submissions for all departments of the magazine. (For a list of departments, click here.) We’re flexible about length, but in general, feature stories should range from around 1,500 to 4,000 words. You may also contribute shorter anecdotes and insights, travel-inspired creative writing, and photography and artwork.

Please read over our mission statement and keep in mind that we are not looking for typical tourist tales or tips. We’re looking for great storytelling, and we hope to find thought, honesty, and sensitivity in whatever you submit.

We prefer to have writers submit their first stories to us on spec, though we will make exceptions for experienced writers. If you have finished work, feel free to forward it for consideration. We'll also review written queries and help shape the direction of your story if needed. In your query, please be specific about what you’d like to write.

NUTS & BOLTS

WRITING STYLE: First-person stories should be written in a narrative style that reads like good fiction, full of colorful details that transport our readers to the scene. Within that narration, where appropriate, we'd like the writer to weave cultural and historical background.

We’ll also consider third-person, issue-oriented articles. These stories might be about tourism for example, exploring the impact of tourism on coral reef ecologies. They might also cover cultural and safety issues specific to women travelers. Or they could cover important political, social or environmental issues in a country that the writer has visited and researched. For these articles we're looking for both good writing and good reporting. Like the first-person narratives, these stories should be written in a strong voice, using imagery and dialogue where appropriate.

You may also want to submit profiles of inspirational women. You could profile a woman traveler, or you could profile a woman you've met on your travels, to give us a good idea of what daily life is like for her. We’ll also consider historical essays that profile early women adventurers. For profiles, we want writers to go beyond information culled from interviews. Much can be learned through careful observation.

DEADLINES:  PASSIONFRUIT is published quarterly, in December, March, June and September. Our deadline for finished manuscripts is three months prior to the date of publication, i.e. September 1 for the Winter issue, December 1 for Spring. While we encourage you to submit your work early, we generally will not make final selections until the deadline has passed. Your patience is appreciated.

FORMATS: You may submit your writing by regular mail or e-mail. (Click here for our addresses.) Writers who submit their work by mail need only send a double-spaced hard copy. Please do not send floppy disks. Send e-mail submissions as attachments, formatted as plain text or as MS Word for Windows documents. IMPORTANT: Be sure to put all your contact information on your submission (on the story itself, not just in a cover letter or e-mail message). Include your name, postal address, e-mail address, and phone and fax numbers.

PHOTOS AND ARTWORK: If you send photos or other artwork that you would like to have returned, please include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage. You may submit slides, negatives or prints, in color or black and white. However, our final output will be black and white, so please choose photos and illustrations that will work in that medium. Please do not send electronic images on disk.

If you are outside of the United States and would like to send images through e-mail, please submit low-resolution proofs, formatted as gifs or jpgs. (Should we decide to use your images, we will ask you to re-send them at higher resolution.)

PAYMENT: Upon publication, we pay $20 to $100 for stories, depending upon length. We also pay $10 to $25 for photos and illustrations and $75 for cover art.

Feel free to contact us with questions. Thank you.
